After a recent ice climbing trip I realised I wanted a new belay parka. I had been using a combo of an Atom LT and Cerium LT from Arc'teryx as my belay solution. \n\nThese jackets fit over my shell, but the Atom wasn't warm enough on it's own and with the Cerium LT in place I was barely able to get everything zipped up. Both of those jackets are really midlayers so they are not ideal for the use/abuse I was putting them through. \n\nWhen I got back from Ouray the research began and I decided to give the super compressor a chance.\n\nThe good\n1. I'm generally in between a small and a medium. I ordered the small and the chest/body area has enough room to easily fit a base layer, a fleece hoody, a 60g/m jacket and my shell.\n\n2. The Super Compressor is warm and seems to be be very wind resistant.\n3. For a belay jacket of this warmth and size it compresses well.\n\nThe areas that need improvement (to get that last star) \n\n1. The hood could be a bit larger in the neck and chin area. It could also have more coverage in the collar. I have no complaints about the size of the top part of the hood, but more volume around the neck would make it easier to zip the last 2 inches or so when you really want to hunker down.I am a little spoiled by the Arc'teryx hoods on my Atom LT and Alpha FL, so I'm picky about hoods. \n\n2. The stuff pocket could be a bit larger. You can stuff the jacket into this pocket, but I worry about the long term reliability of the zipper when using the pocket this way because it is a tight squeeze which puts stress on the zipper. I also wish it had a clip loop that was not attached to the zipper. This seems like a point that could fail and cause issues.\n\n3. I also wish it had a couple of mesh pockets on the inside of the jacket. This isn't a huge issue as I'd generally rather have my lead gloves closer to my body, but pockets are almost always useful.\n\nI haven't had a chance to really test this thing in cold/damp conditions, so I can't say how warm it will be when wet, but so far I'm very pleased. This jacket is well made and will serve me well. Add to that the excellent price and customer service I received from Gear Coop and I'm very happy!
