Meet Lauren. She likes hanging upside down from roof climbs, escaping urban life on her vintage road bike, and baking the best trail-mix cookies ever.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN CLIMBING?
About 5 years, on and off (it sucks when life happens).
HOW OFTEN DO YOU CLIMB?
I try to rough my hands up 2-3 times a week.
HOW DID YOU LEARN?
Watching, asking, trying, and falling. Lots of falling.
WHY DO YOU LOVE TO CLIMB?
It's like playing a game, a puzzle you have to solve with your body. I enjoy that it's as much a mental challenge as it is physical. And it opened up so much of the world to me in a whole new way, from my favorite hiking spots to local buildings.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FUTURE PLANS?
Get my butt off the ground and get trad climbing!
WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO GO?
The Happies in Bishop, Joshua Tree, and Tramway.
WHERE IS YOUR DREAM PLACE TO DO A CLIMBING TRIP?
WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT AS A CLIMBER?
Getting the long move on Solarium in Bishop. Dynos aren't my thing!
ANY SCARY MOMENTS?
Getting to the campus traverse/mantle move on White Rastafarian. I fought the nope, and the nope won.
"All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." - Gandalf
"I felt like lying down by the side of the trail and remembering it all. The woods do that to you, they always look familiar, long lost, like the face of a long-dead relative, like an old dream, like a piece of forgotten song drifting across the water, most of all like golden eternities of past childhood or past manhood and all the living and the dying and the heartbreak that went on a million years ago and the clouds as they pass overhead seem to testify (by their own lonesome familiarity) to this feeling."- Jack Kerouac, The Dharma Bums
my 5 must-haves
LA SPORTIVA SOLUTIONSOh, would you like to edge on a dime, feel every crystal when you climb? Ever since I put on these low-volume versions of the (in)famous Solutions, they're my go-to shoe for power and pushing. Their high performance more than makes up for the fact that they're pink.
EVOLV MAVERICK CRASH PADIt's got a nice, big landing area that's secure all over thanks to continuous dual-density foam, plus life-lengthening features like rubberized corners and a gusseted closure system. It also doubles as a "crash" pad in a pinch.
BLACK DIAMOND BOULDERING BRUSH SETLeave no trace. Bouldering takes you to some beautiful landscapes, but it's up to you to keep them that way. A few lightweight brushes ensures my tick marks only last as long I'm working a problem.
CLIMBSKINA long day of bouldering inevitably ends when your palms are too sore to take it anymore. Climbskin is the first skincare product that I can actually use while I'm climbing: it isn't greasy, it absorbs super-fast, and it soothes the pain that only J-Tree friction can create.
METOLIUS SIMULATOR 3D TRAINING BOARDI have one of these hangboards in my garage, plus we have one here at the Coop--it's everywhere. No matter where I'm working, I can throw in some dead hangs and pullups on whatever hold I feel like, from slopers to crimps. It hurts so good.
